Japanese Language and Culture

Our school has a strong relationship with three schools in Japan. Every second year, students in Years 6 and 7 can participate in a Study Tour to Japan. Each alternate year, children from the three Japanese school communities visit Ironside and are billeted by our families.

Research strongly states that the study of languages is most effective if introduced early. We are delighted to offer our students in Prep and Years 1, 2 and 3 an opportunity to informally study Japanese Language and Culture as an extra-curricular subject. Students receive a half hour weekly lesson by our teachers, Mrs Nahoko Mulvey and Mrs Janet Matthew.

The purpose of this program is to introduce our students to the language and culture of Japan. This aligns to the more formal Japanese studies in Years 5, 6 and 7.

Our young children will learn about Japanese customs and festivals through dance, drama, movement, oral language and art and craft. They will learn Japanese greetings and some basic vocabulary.

It is quite amazing how quickly the children learn and how interested they are in all aspects of Japanese language and culture.

We thank our Ironside parents for their support of this innovative program.
