In 2022, Ironside State School transitioned from a 1:1 laptop program to a dedicated Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model for our Years 5 and 6 students. This shift enables greater access to technology, creating flexible and personalised digital learning across these year levels.

With BYOD, students bring a device that they are familiar with, allowing seamless integration of digital tools in class and at home. This supports our curriculum delivery and aligns with the Australian Curriculum's Digital Technologies learning area and the ICT general capability.

Program Structure and Eligibility

  • The BYOD program is currently available to students in Years 5 and 6.
  • For students in Prep to Year 4: While they are not yet in BYOD, we explicitly teach the knowledge, skills and cybersafe behaviours needed for future entry into the BYOD environment.
  • Students who choose not to bring a device through BYOD will still be supported by shared, school-owned devices during class time (which may be shared between two students, depending on numbers).

Device Requirements
To ensure compatibility with our network, software and classroom tasks, devices must meet or exceed the specifications listed in the “Ironside BYOD Laptop Specifications" document (see sidebar). Please note: devices running Apple iPadOS or iOS, Android, ChromeOS or Chromebook, or Linux-only operating systems are not supported in our BYOD environment. We require full laptop-style devices that comply with our software and network standards.

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Before joining the program, all students and their parent or caregiver must read and sign the Student BYOD Handbook (available in the sidebar).
  • Students must bring their device fully charged each day and be ready to use the technology when directed.
  • The core purpose of the device at school is for educational use. Personal or recreational use is subject to teacher direction and our Student Responsible Behaviour Plan.
  • We strongly recommend that the device be covered by insurance (for loss, theft or accidental damage) and has an adequate warranty to remain functional for the life of the device.

Getting Started
